The Beach
Pulled into Kings Beach mid-afternoon. Dropped everything, walked straight to the sand. The lake was impossibly blue, snow still dusting the peaks across the water. Kayakers dotting the surface, wind starting to pick up, California Gulls working the shoreline like they owned the place. The kind of afternoon where you just sit there and let it happen.
Kings Beach. First afternoon on the north shore.
The pier at Kings Beach, and kayakers heading out into the blue.
Day 1 · Late AfternoonThe Hike
Stateline Fire Lookout. A mile and a half, 300 feet of elevation, and suddenly you're looking down at the entire lake through a canopy of Jeffrey pines and manzanita. The trail follows the California-Nevada state line -- you're literally hiking the border. At the top, the whole basin opens up. Worth every step.
Halfway up. The lake appearing through the pines, the town shrinking below.
Top of the Stateline Fire Lookout. Lake Tahoe stretching out behind us, granite underfoot, pine resin in the air.
