Kings Beach, Lake Tahoe

Kings Beach, CA 96143

A weekend on the north shore

Two days away from the city. Cold water, warm sand, mountains in every direction.

The drive from San Francisco takes about three and a half hours if you hit it right, longer if Tahoe traffic has anything to say about it. But the moment you drop down into Kings Beach and see that water -- impossibly blue, ringed by snow-dusted peaks even in late May -- you forget every minute of the drive.

This wasn't a big production. No checklist, no itinerary binder. Just a weekend at the lake with the person you want to be there with.

Arrived at Kings Beach mid-morning. The lake was calm, the kind of flat glass you only get before the afternoon wind picks up. Dropped bags, grabbed a towel, and headed straight for the sand.

Kings Beach pier
The pier at Kings Beach stretching into the lake. Shoes off, towel down, afternoon ahead of us.

Kings Beach is wider than you'd expect. The sand is coarse but warm, and the water is that particular shade of Tahoe blue that doesn't exist anywhere else. The mountains across the lake still had snow on them -- a reminder that it's barely June, even if the sun felt like midsummer.

California Gull at Kings Beach
A California Gull working the shallows. They own this beach -- you're just visiting.

Spent the afternoon doing absolutely nothing. Watched the gulls patrol the waterline, felt the sun, listened to the lake. Sometimes the best version of a day is the one where you don't have a plan.

Crystal blue water, snow on the peaks, a gull that couldn't care less about you. That's Tahoe in late May.

Later: brunch at Rosie's Cafe in Tahoe City. The kind of place where the line wraps around the building on weekends and you don't mind waiting because someone hands you coffee while you stand there. Then a short drive to the Stateline Fire Lookout -- a 1.7-mile loop that climbs to a viewing platform on the California-Nevada border. Panoramic views of the entire basin. Supposedly Mark Twain accidentally set this hillside on fire. Seems on brand.

Dinner at Koi Sushi in Incline Village. Good fish, quiet night. Walked out to the sound of the lake doing its thing in the dark.
