#1 Best Overall

Breakthrough Sushi

Chef Kaz -- 14+ years, taught 30,000+ guests
$119 / person 4.8 Yelp (75 reviews) / 5.0 ClassBento (32) 2.5 hours

The benchmark. You make five or more rolls (California, Rainbow, hand rolls), learn knife skills, fish sourcing, and sushi history. Sustainable seafood sourced via Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. Comes with a free 80-page digital recipe book. Groups of 10-20 in a social atmosphere -- good for dates or team outings. Abundant food; bring a to-go container.

Corporate clients include Microsoft, McKinsey, Genentech. Also holds classes in San Jose/Santa Clara and San Carlos/Palo Alto monthly.

"Kaz is the real deal. We learned knife skills, sushi history, fish sourcing, and made incredible sushi. Best sushi class experience in San Francisco." -- Yelp review

#2 Most Authentic

Gochiso Kitchen

Chef Kyoko -- Japanese native, authentic home-style teaching
$125 / person 5.0 Google 3.5 hours (incl. meal)

The real deal for Japanese cooking authenticity. Kyoko teaches out of her private residence in the SoMa / Peninsula area. Small intimate groups (max ~8). You learn proper sushi rice, hand-rolled sushi, and sit down to eat what you made together. Includes a small dessert she prepares. BYOB, no corkage.

This is the class if you want to actually understand Japanese food culture, not just roll California rolls. She also offers a $115 basic Japanese cooking class (miso soup, dashi maki tamago, clay pot rice).

Next dates: June 13 (1 spot!), June 20, 21, 27, July 11 -- all at 4 PM or 11 AM.

#3 Best Platform

Cozymeal -- Chef Kaz (Rolls and More)

Chef Kaz -- same instructor as Breakthrough Sushi, booked via Cozymeal
$85-149 / person 4.9 Cozymeal (770+ platform reviews) 2-3 hours

Same excellent Chef Kaz, but booked through Cozymeal -- which sometimes runs at different price points and locations (SF, Mountain View). California and Rainbow rolls, sushi rice technique, seaweed salad. The Cozymeal platform adds free cancellation up to 48 hours and group/corporate booking features.

Cozymeal also lists his class as a team-building activity at $145/person for groups of 4-30.

#4 Most Comprehensive

Classpop! -- Chef Edison (Specialty Rolls & Sushi Staples)

Chef Edison -- 10+ years professional sushi chef
$90-144 / person 5.0 Classpop! 3 hours

The deepest curriculum. Covers sashimi cutting, nigiri formation, traditional starters (miso soup, edamame), and specialty rolls with seasonal fish selections. Chef Edison teaches proper fish preparation from whole fillet to plate. Groups of 2-10, accommodates dietary restrictions.

Multiple class variants: "Secrets of Sushi" (creative rolls like Lion King), "Perfect Sushi Rolls and Nigiri" (traditional), and "Specialty Rolls" (seasonal). All 3 hours.

#5 Best Variety

Classpop! -- Chef Phoebe (Sushi & Mochi)

Chef Phoebe -- Japanese cuisine + pastry
$130 / person 5.0 Classpop! 3 hours

The "most bang for your buck" curriculum. You make sushi rolls, okonomiyaki, tempura, AND mochi ice cream from scratch -- it is basically four classes in one. Great if you want to learn a broader range of Japanese cooking, not just sushi. Chef Phoebe also runs a gourmet sushi dinner on Cozymeal with seasonal ingredients and dessert.

#6 Best for Advanced

Cozymeal -- Chef Mari (Expert Sushi-Making Course)

Chef Mari -- critically acclaimed Japanese chef
$129-149 / person 4.9 Cozymeal 2.5 hours

The expert-level class. Focused on fish selection, whole fish filleting, sashimi/nigiri technique, and advanced sushi rice preparation. Includes wine and beer pairings. This is the class for someone who already knows the basics and wants to level up to understanding the craft -- not just rolling things in nori. Chef Mari also runs a sushi-making competition format for team events.

Solid Options

#7 Best South Bay

Sushi Confidential (Sushi Randy)

Sushi Randy -- founder, 7-location South Bay chain
~$85-120 / person (estimated) 4.0 TripAdvisor (400+ reviews for restaurant) 2 hours

A restaurant-run class from the South Bay's biggest sushi chain (7 locations). You make 3 sushi rolls and get a sake tasting. Accommodates vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and shellfish allergies. The vibe is casual and fun rather than deeply instructional. Good option if you are in the South Bay and want something easy to access without driving to SF.

Classes are event-based -- check their site or sign up for their newsletter for next dates.

#8 Best Date Night

Cozymeal -- Chef Andrea (Roll Your Own, Date Night)

Chef Andrea -- Palo Alto based
$109 / person 4.3 (60 reviews) 2 hours

Designed specifically as a date night: couples learn to recreate their favorite rolls together. Includes tea, coffee, water. Ages 18+. Lower rating than others (4.3 vs 4.7+) and reviews are mixed on depth of instruction, but the romantic setting in Palo Alto is unique. Best if the date > the sushi education.

#9 Budget Pick

Cozymeal -- Chef Elham (Perfecting Sushi Rolls)

Chef Elham -- 16 years culinary experience, certified food safety
$139 / person 4.7 (62 reviews) 1.5 hours

San Jose-based class with a full 3-course meal included. Learn nigiri and seafood rolls from scratch. Chef Elham is experienced but reviews are polarized -- some rave, others note limited menu variety and occasional quality issues with side dishes. The 3-course meal format means less hands-on time per roll. Also available on Classpop! as "Homemade Sushi for Everyone" at a lower price point (~$90).

#10 Marketplace

ClassBento (Multiple Providers)

Various chefs across SF, Oakland, San Jose
$65-185 / person 4.5+ (varies by instructor) 1.5-2.5 hours

ClassBento is an aggregator listing classes from multiple independent chefs. Widest price range ($65 entry point is the cheapest in the Bay). Money-back guarantee if unsatisfied. Quality varies by instructor -- read individual reviews carefully. Good for gift cards (they sell a lot of those). Oakland classes priced at $150 for groups of 5-10 (so $30/person with a full group, which is a steal).

Map

My take: If you want one recommendation -- Breakthrough Sushi (#1). Kaz is genuinely great, the $119 price point is fair for 2.5 hours with 5+ rolls and premium sustainable fish, and the Yelp reviews are consistently specific and positive (not generic "great class!" filler). If you want something more intimate and authentically Japanese, Gochiso Kitchen (#2) with Chef Kyoko is the move -- but book fast, June dates are filling up. For South Bay convenience, Sushi Confidential is the low-friction option.
