Cheap, Hackable AI-Audio Wearables

Deep-dive research, October 18, 2026. The brief: Pocket-style ambient-audio hardware from China marketplaces that is cheap, easy to attach or wear, dual-purpose (including as a laptop audio input), and as programmable as possible. Prices are as found on the day; items marked "listing price" were seen in marketplace listings/aggregators and should be re-checked on the page before ordering.
Recommended first order — $70.67 before shipping/tax: (1) Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, $13.99 — the prototyping core; (2) Seeed XIAO nRF52840 Sense, $15.90 — the low-power BLE variant; (3) Hagibis LYB615, $40.78 — a finished Pocket-style puck to benchmark against, with raw WAV export over USB. Together they cover ambient-audio prototyping and the laptop-microphone requirement (the ESP32-S3 can present itself as a USB Audio Class mic via Espressif's official component). Omi Dev Kit 2 is the second-order move: its software is fully public, so evaluate it for free before spending $69.99.

1 · Magnetic phone-back pucks (the Pocket form factor)

AI voice recorder puck

Generic "AI Voice Recorder & Call Recorder," 64GB (AIREC ecosystem)

$42.23 AliExpress, listing price · 841 sold, 4.6★
  • Credit-card-thin magnetic puck: 0.12 in thick, 1.09 oz
  • 500 mAh battery, ~25 h recording; 64GB (540 h claimed)
  • Air mic + vibration-conduction (VCS) mic for phone calls
  • App: AIREC — GPT-4o transcription/summaries
Openness: closed. No SDK, API, GitHub, or documented BLE. AIREC pricing: 600 free min/mo for 1 yr, then Premium $69.99/yr (1,800 min) or Unlimited $149.99/yr.
Drawback: the AIREC Android app rates 2.19/5 — reviews cite hung transcripts and crashes transferring long files. The app is the risk, not the hardware.

Hagibis LYB615 magnetic AI voice recorder

Hagibis LYB615 Magnetic AI Voice Recorder

$40.78 Amazon US
  • 64GB, Bluetooth 5, USB-C, 94 × 61 × 5.1 mm, 60 g
  • 640 mAh; "73 h" marketing claim — realistic estimate 25–35 h continuous
  • Metal ring mount included (MagSafe-style attach)
Openness: closed app, but raw audio escapes. Recordings are accessible as AIFF/WAV/WMA files over USB mass storage, so your own pipeline can take it from there. No SDK. Hagibis-specific subscription terms were conflicting across sources — check the app before relying on the free tier.

2 · The open one — Omi

Omi pendant

3 · Rings

Pebble Index 01 ring

Pebble Index 01

$75 pre-order · $99 after launch · most pre-orders have now shipped
  • Stainless steel, water-resistant to 1 m, sizes 6–13
  • Mic + single button, push-to-record; ~5 min on-ring storage
  • Silver-oxide battery, NON-rechargeable: 12–15 h total recording ≈ 2 years of light use, then recycle
Openness: open software pipeline. Recordings are processed on-phone with open-source speech-to-text/LLM inside the open-source Pebble app; no subscription; webhooks can route raw audio/transcripts, and local MCP actions are supported.
Drawback for this brief: push-to-talk only — Pebble explicitly positions it as not a meeting or ambient recorder.

Chengdu Fibe OEM "voice recorder" ring — caution

$9.90–64 Alibaba listings · MOQ 2
  • Two listings: "Smart Ring with Voice Recorder, Touch Display & Gesture Control" ($9.90–16.90, 6 sold) and an "M3" ring ($33–64)
  • No listing text anywhere specifies a microphone, storage, battery, or Bluetooth version
Openness: 0 / unverifiable. Best reading of the evidence: "voice" almost certainly means touch/gesture control of the phone's recorder, not onboard capture. Do not buy expecting an Index competitor.

Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 Sense

Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 Sense ⭐

$13.99 Seeed Studio, in stock, MOQ 1
  • ESP32-S3 @ 240 MHz, 8MB PSRAM / 8MB flash, microSD up to 32GB
  • PDM digital mic (MP34DT06JTR) + detachable OV3660 camera board
  • Wi-Fi + BLE 5.0, LiPo charge management, 21 × 17.8 × 15 mm
  • Measured recording draw ~46–54 mA → ~7 h per 400 mAh cell
Openness: fully programmable (Arduino / ESP-IDF / MicroPython). Laptop-mic brief: feasible — Espressif's official usb_device_uac component makes any ESP32-S3 present as a USB Audio Class microphone; it's an ESP-IDF project, not stock firmware. (Ready-made alternative: reSpeaker Lite with UAC2 firmware.) Seeed's "DIY AI pin" is a video demo build using this board, not a kit.

Seeed XIAO nRF52840 Sense

Seeed XIAO nRF52840 Sense

$15.90 Sense SKU · beware: Seeed's $9.99 page is the non-Sense board with NO mic
  • nRF52840 (Cortex-M4F), 1MB flash / 256KB RAM + 2MB QSPI
  • PDM mic (MSM261D3526H1CPM) + LSM6DS3TR-C 6-axis IMU
  • BLE 5.0 + NFC, BQ25101 LiPo charger, sleep draw under 5 µA
  • Same 21 × 17.8 mm footprint
Openness: fully programmable, the BLE-audio specialist. This is the hardware class the original Omi/Friend dev kits used; streaming runs to tens of hours per 400 mAh (estimate — no measured figure found). No practical USB-audio path, so it is not the pick for the laptop-mic brief.

DIY puck: ESP32-S3 SuperMini + INMP441 mic

≈ $8–14 total BOM

  • ~400 mAh LiPo ($3–5, unverified), charge board, button, printed case

5 · The in-shoe angle — honest verdict

No cheap programmable insole with electronics exists on Alibaba/AliExpress. What exists there is raw FSR pressure-sensor insoles with no chip or radio ($66–300). The real products are research-grade: Moticon ReGo (16 pressure sensors + 6-axis IMU, BLE, ~30 h) with OpenGo SDK licenses at $1,995–$3,995, and Brilliant Sole (open JS/Unreal/Unity SDKs, price not published). Practical path: embed a XIAO Sense board + small LiPo + pressure sensors in or on a shoe for ~$20–25 — with the mic at the ankle or laces, not underfoot.
